Dig Dug is an arcade action game set in underground tunnels, where the hero digs through the earth while hunting monsters. A harpoon pump inflates enemies until they burst, while falling rocks can crush several foes at once—or catch the hero beneath them.
Clearing every monster on screen advances the game to the next stage. Moving more dirt and defeating enemies in more difficult ways raises the score, and collectible vegetables and other items provide additional points. Rocks can also be used as traps by luring enemies into the tunnels.
