A turn-based strategy game with squad-level tactical combat, UFO: Extraterrestrials is set in 2025 on the newly colonized planet Esperanza, where alien machines have launched an attack. The player commands a squad of soldiers, support combat vehicles, robots, and air units operating from a base. Global strategy is combined with turn-based battles involving small squads, where using the terrain and surroundings is key to repelling the invasion. If the threat to Esperanza is overcome, the story continues on Earth, which has been subdued by alien forces.
