This hack-and-slash platform game is set in a retro-futuristic New York City in 1985, three years before the events of the first Ninja Gaiden. Ryu Hayabusa battles the forces of Emperor Garuda, a servant of Jaquio, in an effort to save the city.
Ryu fights with a sword and a Fire Wheel attack, whose limited supply can be replenished. Destroying containers can also yield health potions, extra Fire Wheel charges, and additional lives. He can grab onto railings, move beneath them, and attack while hanging; a grappling hook lets him reach otherwise inaccessible railings. Its selection of ninja techniques and power-ups is simpler than in the NES games.
